BUTO'T BALAT: A Sunday with the Oldies :)

As was customary of my mother, she would always ask us children where to eat after Sunday mass. I suggested Buto't Balat since I have thought about eating there for days now, and so we had an early dinner at their Jaro branch.

Buto't Balat Jaro branch

The native interiors and landscape of all the Buto't Balat branches offers a cool, laid back dining experience. I actually like their casitas and the peacefulness of the place (when we got there there were practically no other diners. heheh). And at night, mellow lights turns the place into a romantic setting.

I think their name is a reference to the state of the food after being eaten: only the skin and bones remain because it's delicious that everything will be consumed. They offer Seafood, Filipino, and Asian Fusion food. Click here to get a glimpse of the restaurant's menu.

Managat grilled and sigang

We ordered Managat fish: the body was grilled and the head turned into sigang. My father didn't like this much because the fish was too bony (I thought so too), and my mother had mix reviews about it. The soup had little veggies in it, but overall it was ok.

As always we had grilled squid.

Binagoongang Baboy

And I chose this one, Binagoongang Baboy. The taste was just perfect, not too salty. I really like the binagoong (or ginamus in Ilonggo) they used.

Buto't Balat Diversion Rd. branch

Buto't Balat is always the choice for mini class reunions, and we did just that last March in their Diversion Rd branch. Because most of us were jobless at that time (heheh) and no one would seem to shoulder much of the bill, we each settled for their Solo Meals. I ordered the sweet and sour pork, and I thought it was below my standards. A friend ordered fried chicken, and complained that it does not have any taste at all! So spare yourself and don't order their solo meals.

If you're looking for native Filipino dishes in Iloilo City, Buto't Balat is one of the most recommended restaurants though. A native feel, laid back atmosphere, and good service will surely make your gastronomic adventure a memorable one.
